How to back up a Studio One song with all its audio
Use File > Save to New Folder and pick the backup drive. It writes the .song into a new folder with a fresh Media subfolder holding copies of every file the song uses, and leaves out media the song no longer uses. Do not use Save As for this: Save As writes only the .song to the new place and keeps pointing at the media in the old folder. For one file you can send, export a Zip instead. Since January 2026 Studio One is sold as Fender Studio Pro 8. The steps below follow its 8.1 manual; songs are still .song files and the save commands keep their Studio One names.
Back up a song
- Save to New Folder: a complete working copy (song plus copied media) in a new folder. The copy becomes the song you are working on.
- Zip File (from File > Save As or File > Convert To): the song and all the media it uses in one
.zip, without unused files or alternate versions. Tick Lossless audio file compression (FLAC) to make it smaller. The dialog lists the sound sets and plugins the song uses; those are never included, because they are licensed products. - Ask to Copy External Files when Saving, in Preferences under Locations: Studio One asks to copy any file from outside the song folder (a sample pack on your desktop) into it when you save, so the folder is complete by default.
A Zip made this way opens with File > Open, which unpacks it before the song opens.
Version a song and roll back
File > Save New Version keeps a version of the song without a new Media folder:
- With Incremental version ticked, it saves a numbered version and you carry on in that one.
- Unticked, it stores the version in the song's
Historysubfolder and you keep working on the original.
File > Restore Version opens the versions saved for the open song. Autosave, set in Preferences under Locations > User Data, runs a normal save at the interval you choose and never during playback.
Send a song to a collaborator
Send the Zip. Tell them which Studio One version you saved with and which third-party plugins the song needs. For someone on Bitwig or Cubase, Studio One 6.5 added DAWproject export (File > Convert To > DAWproject File), the open format those DAWs read.
Export stems for mixing or mastering
- Open Export Stems from the Song menu.
- Pick what to export on the Tracks tab (tracks in the arrangement) or the Channels tab (channels in the Console). Muted ones start unticked.
- Each file is what you would hear soloing that track or channel, inserts included. Turn off inserts you do not want printed before exporting.
- Choose WAV or AIFF at the song's sample rate, and export the whole song (Session Content in Fender Studio Pro 8) or the range between the start and end markers, so every file starts at the same point.
Between Each Marker writes a set of stems per marker range, each in a folder named after the marker, which is handy for sending one section to a remixer.
Doing it in Aden
Aden's desktop app syncs Studio One songs and reads part of the .song file.
- Your songs, listed. The desktop app finds
.songfiles on your disk and lists them on Home. - Sync the song folder to a track (Max plan). Every save is pushed. A collaborator clicks Pull for the latest files; a pull never overwrites their local edits, it saves the incoming file as a versioned copy beside theirs. Every synced file keeps its version history, downloadable from the track's Project files page.
- A check before you send. Send as a transfer zips the song folder into a link that expires in 30 days, and tells you to copy your media in first when it holds little more than the
.song. - What the web shows. The Project files page reads the song's tracks and the plugins it loads (instruments and channel inserts, with their format). It does not play the
.songarrangement. Export a DAWproject into the synced folder and Aden plays that instead, as a sketch with your audio and stand-in sounds for third-party instruments. Without one, it plays the bounce linked to the song, or the track's final version. - Record over it. Press Record to sing over the song in the browser. Each take is saved as a 24-bit WAV in an
Aden Takes/folder in the song folder, named by the bar to drop it at. - Feedback on the bounce. Export the mixdown and the desktop app notices it: named after a track you have, it offers it as that track's next version. Send a share link and people comment at a timestamp or on a section of the waveform, with no Aden account needed on a link with comments turned on. Send for review asks them to approve it or request changes, and Compare flips between mixes at the same playhead.
- Stems on a version. Upload your exported stems to the version's Stems tab to play them together under the mix.
- Aden inside Studio One. The desktop app installs Aden as a VST3 and Audio Unit plugin on macOS and Windows. Put it on the main out to see the track's notes, lyrics and session without leaving Studio One.
